Neither political party utters the word ‘innovation’

Comment by Peter Roberts

Like many I was hot under the collar when Treasurer Josh Frydenberg failed to mention the word ‘innovation’ during last week’s federal budget speech.

Shadow industry minister, Kim Carr, spent the next day chiding the government for failing to mention a concept which only a few years ago was the centrepiece of government policy.

And so it should be – investing in innovation today pays off tomorrow in new products and processes, improved productivity and a better life.

I am grateful to the InnovationAus.com website for pointing out that Opposition Leader, Bill Shorten didn’t utter the word either in his budget reply.

There was mention of the importance of education, but as for innovation…

Is Australia, which as @AuManufacturing has pointed out, is falling way behind its competitors in the innovation race, now an innovation policy free zone?
