Nourish Ingredients expands into Singapore

Canberra-based food tech company Nourish Ingredients, which makes animal-free fats used in plant-based foods via precision fermentation, has announced that it will set up a facility in Singapore’s Food Tech Innovation Centre (FTIC.) 

In a statement on Tuesday, Nourish said it will operate from the flagship pilot and development facility run by Nurasa, where it will access shared labs and pilot-scale equipment. Nurasa is part of the Singapore government-owned investment firm Temasek.

“Singapore’s highly enabling ecosystem – from regulatory and legal support to production capabilities – and commitment to innovation and sustainability makes it an ideal hub for showcasing our groundbreaking natural fats to investors and customers in the Asia Pacific region,” said Anna El Tahchy, CTO & Founder Director of Nourish Ingredients. 

“We know that if we can improve the taste of alternative proteins, Nourish Ingredients can spur the category’s mainstream consumer adoption for greater food security in Singapore.”

Nourish describes itself as recreating “natural animalic fats without the animal” through products that can “provide the authentic taste, smell and cooking experience people want and expect, without the cost or chemicals.” 

Nourish announced in October 2022 that it had raised $US29 million, with backers including Hostplus and Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-shing.

It has formed a collaboration with Nurasa joint venture company ScaleUp Bio – a food technology contract development and manufacturing organisation – and has started establishing a regional footprint to access the market and more easily work with regulatory body the Singapore Food Authority.

The Singaporean presence and partnership with the applied research-focussed Agency for Science, Technology, and Research (A*STAR), would also align the Australian company with Singapore’s goal of producing 30 per cent of its nutritional needs locally by 2030.
