Pacific Green gets planning permit for “Australia’s largest grid-scale battery” at Portland

Grid-scale battery energy storage business Pacific Green has received a planning permit from the state government to build the planned gigawatt-scale Portland Energy Park, Victoria.

According to a statement from the company on Monday, the project will be its second battery energy park in Australia, and located on Madeira Packet Road, near both the Portland Aluminium Smelter and the Portland Water Treatment Plant.

Pacific Green said the park will be “developed in phases over the next 36 months” and provide “up to” a gigawatt of firming capacity and be the nation’s “largest battery energy park” when complete.

“Once operational, Portland will stand as Australia’s largest grid-scale battery, driving Victoria’s energy transition forward,” said Pacific Green Energy Storage Australia’s Managing Director, Joel Alexander.

“At a regional level, we extend our thanks to local First Nations representatives, the community and stakeholders for their engagement, and we look forward to sharing further updates on supply chain opportunities as the project progresses.”

State energy minister Lily D’Ambrosio added: “This battery will soak up cheap renewable power during the day and deliver it when demand peaks – powering 345,000 homes and slashing energy bills across the state.”

Portland follows the one-gigawatt of battery energy storage constructed by the company at Limestone Coast, South Australia, and is part of an ambition to install more than 7 gigawatt hours' worth of battery energy parks across the National Electricity Market.
