PurifloH technology destroys PFAS contaminants in tests

Technology

ASX listed water purification technology developer PurifloH has reported the external validation when tested by Osmoflo Pty Ltd of its PFAS destruction technology.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of persistent chemical contaminants thought to have the potential to cause damage to the liver and the immune system.

Water samples from two PFAS contaminated sites – a South Australian Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) and an Australian Department of Defence base – were treated utilising the company’s Free Radical Generation (FRG) technology.

The technology combines UV light, free radicals and electrons in a single system to destroy contaminants.

Trials achieved 100 percent PFAS destruction in runoff water (with PFAS concentrations of 200 – 500 ppt), and 99.5-100 percent PFAS destruction in highly concentrated Reverse Osmosis brines (with PFAS concentrations of 10,000 – 500,000 ppt) in short treatment cycles.

At present, there is no clear commercial solution to destroy PFAS in situ – PFAS-contaminated waste must be stored on-site or disposed of in hazardous waste landfills.

PuriflOH said in a statement that it was focused on scaling its technology and pursuing strategic market opportunities.

“The Company is in discussions with several global operators with a view to identifying strategic partners to deploy its PFAS destruction technology to contaminated sites.”
