Seeley cools historic Adelaide Central Market

Air conditioning and water heating manufacturer Seeley International’s Climate Wizard air conditioning technology has been successfully installed to meet the difficult challenge of the refurbishment of Adelaide Central Market which features wide openings to the outside.

The 32 rooftop-mounted Climate Wizard CW-H15S Plus units (pictured, below) provide 51,200 litres per second of 100 percent treated outside air into the market, cooling the market to 22 degrees, with 24 degrees possible on the hottest days.

The system now provides positive pressure to the relatively open space to eliminate infiltration load from the large trafficable entrances.

At Adelaide summer design conditions, the units are able to reduce the air temperature by over 20 degrees and provide a total of 640 kilowatts of stand-alone cooling into the building.

General Manager of Adelaide Central Market Jodie Kannan said it was a ‘fantastic outcome’ to be able to contract a local manufacturer offering Australian designed and made systems for the replacement of its old evaporative air cooling system.

Kannan said: “Climate Wizard introduces cool, fresh air from outside, which is really important for our customers and traders.

“Particularly with our traders on the market floor, who are here for long days and work hard physically at different times; having that cool fresh air from outside and bringing it into this environment definitely makes it a healthier work place and better for our customers who come to shop with us as well.”

The heart of the novel Climate Wizard system is a PVC pad made up of a series of alternating wet channels and dry channels.

Hot air from the outside is blown in through the dry channels, a portion of the air is supplied to the building, and the rest is returned to the air through the wet channels, where the evaporative cooling process takes place.

Heat is exchanged between the cool, wet channels and the incoming air, so no moisture is added to the air in the process.

Seeley was the recipient of $1 million from the Advanced Manufacturing Growth Centre’s Commercialisation Fund for a $2.64 million project to develop a manufacturing line for its ultra-high efficiency roof top Heating Ventilation and Cooling Unit (HVAC).
