The Defence Innovation Hub will seek submissions that aim to strengthen defence capabilities in guided weapons and explosive ordnance, integrated air and missile defence, and undersea warfare.

In a statement on Thursday, the federal government named the three areas as of an immediate strategic importance to defence, and which would be a focus for government investment. A summary is available here.

“Submissions made before 1 July 2022 will be evaluated based on the Hub’s existing innovation priorities, all submissions made after 1 July 2022 will be considered based on the new focus areas and operational domains,” said the DIH, adding that further updates would be given in the lead-up to July.

“Our strategic environment has changed and the importance of a resilient and innovative Australian defence industry is more critical than ever,” said defence industry minister Melissa Price.

“These changes will ensure we can continue to leverage the very best innovation Australia has to offer and deliver a capability edge for Defence.”

The Defence Innovation Hub is one of two main defence innovation programs – along with the Next Generation Technologies Fund – and provides support for technology developments that “are ready to enter the engineering and development stages of the innovation process.”
