Packaging and recycling business Visy has released a virtual tour through one of its recycling facilities, allowing a user to see how materials are separated into different streams “through manual, mechanical and optical sorting,” how sorted materials are made into new products, and other onsite goings-on.
In a statement on Tuesday, Visy said the virtual tour was released to coincide with Global Recycling Day (observed every March 18) and communicates “the complexity of recycling centres, as well as why it’s important for households to get recycling right”.

Tierry Lauren, Executive General Manager of Recycling at Visy, said, “Not everyone gets the chance to walk through a recycling facility, but our virtual tour is the next best thing.
“By giving people the tools to make informed decisions, we can work together to reduce contamination, improve recycling rates, and ultimately contribute to a circular economy where resources are reused and remade instead of wasted.”
According to the nation’s largest recycling company, its partnerships with councils see it process roughly “40 per cent of Australia’s kerbside recycling bins” and it believes that “materials are not recycled until they’ve been made into new products.”
Visy makes products using recycled materials including cardboard boxes, water bottles, jam jars and food and beverage cans.
