Australian Made welcomes “unprecedented” level of support

The Australian Made Campaign (AMCL) has welcomed an extra $20 million announced in last week’s federal budget to encourage more Australians to buy locally made products, which funds a new multimedia campaign, more companies getting Australian Made certification, and improvements to the Made in Australia directory.

In a statement on Saturday, AMCL said the funding is in addition to a recently-announced $5 million injection over three years to fund increased awareness of  the Australian Made logo in export markets, and the “Buy Australian Plan” covering procurement contracts with a new Australian business definition.

“This level of support for Australian Made is unprecedented, and we look forward to contributing to a strengthened Australian manufacturing sector that not only creates high-quality products but creates new jobs and economic activity,” said Australian Made Chief Executive Ben Lazzaro.

“It’s important that we value our manufacturing sector and foster an environment that encourages and assists manufacturers to innovate and build on their success while providing pathways to new markets.”

According to the federal government, the $20 million announced in the budget covers:

  • Launching a major new campaign – in stores, online and across media around Australia – to realise the economic and job benefits of more people buying Australian;
  • Supporting more local manufacturers and producers to get Australian Made certification – giving local businesses the competitive edge they are looking for; and
  • Improving the online Made in Australia directory – so it’s easier to search for and find Australian products.

“We want to make sure when customers walk into a shop, they know straight away which products are made in Australia,” said industry minister Ed Husic and prime minister Anthony Albanese in a joint statement on the weekend while campaigning in Bundaberg in Queensland.

“2024 Roy Morgan research found more than 90 [per cent] of Australians have a preference for Aussie made products – that’s why we’re making it easier to find them.”
