E-waste recycler, recycled roads and industry electrification researchers among Premier’s Sustainability Award winners

The Victorian Premier’s Sustainability Awards have been held, with winners including Enable Social Enterprises, which took out the Premier’s Recognition Award for its e-waste business.

Enable assists disadvantaged workers in reentering the workforce. Among the company’s businesses is Enable IT Recycling, which “created 10 employment pathways while diverting 133,046kgs of e-waste from landfill” according to a statement.

The Volunteer Working Group for the Electrifying Industry report, published by Beyond Zero Emissions, won the inaugural Environmental Volunteering award. EI examines the potential for industry to minimise its carbon output and operate more profitably by switching to electric power from sources such as gas.

Other winners include engineering firm Downer won the large business category for Reconophalt, which converts waste such as plastic bags and printer cartridges into asphalt, and the Warrnambool family farm Kia Ora, for its Ethical, Sustainable, Profitable wool project.
