Radio frequency communications specialist GME has announced its acquisition of defence electronics company Eylex.
In a statement on Wednesday, GME said the acquisition represented “full ownership and management control” of Eylex, and will boost its “innovation opportunities and assist in its ongoing diversification efforts” within the “defence, security and resilience sectors”.
The value of the acquisition was not shared.
Eylex manufactures products including tactical antennae, batteries and power supply equipment, headsets and handsets, and ruggedised displays and computing.
GME’s Managing Director, Stephen Millar, said the company was “excited for the next phase of sovereign defence manufacturing”.
“Developing and manufacturing High Assurance electronic equipment in Australia gives defence a crucial strategic advantage by being less reliant on global allies and supply chains,” he added.
GME opened a new Zone 4 manufacturing facility at its Winston Hills headquarters in May 2022.
Eylex will operate under the same name and at the same Norwest premises.
Eylex General Manager Simon Coates said, “We have a lot we can learn from GME, and vice versa, as we bring our defence expertise to support GME’s interest and investment in this vital industry.”
GME was established in 1959 as Standard Components, and became Greenwich Marine Electronics in 1972. It is currently Australia’s only manufacturer of UHF CB (ultra-high frequency citizen band) radios and emergency beacons. It began diversifying into defence about seven years ago.
