Hanwha places order with Bisalloy for Egyptian project

Hanwha Aerospace has placed what it called a “significant order” with Wollongong, NSW-based  Bisalloy Steel for armour plates on the KP, K10 and K11 program for the Egyptian government.

The two companies announced an MoU in February last year, covering the use of Bisalloy’s steel for land platforms such as the Redback Infantry Fighting Vehicle and the K9 Self-Propelled Howitzer, for export to international markets.

Hanwha Aerospace is the South Korean parent company of Hanwha Defense Australia (HDA), which was selected by the Australian government in late-2021 for the Australian Army’s LAND 8116 project, valued at between $0.9 billion and $1.3 billion project

Hanwha said in a statement on Tuesday that it had been working hard behind the scenes with Bisalloy in Korea and Australia on “this significant milestone for Australian Defence Industry.” The value of the order was not disclosed.

HDA Managing Director Richard Cho said: “We see this very productive partnership continuing for many years as we explore further opportunities to use Bisalloy steel in the wider Hanwha product range, building on our strong foundation.

“Strategic supply for Korea, for both local and international programs, is an essential national requirement and Bisalloy are now a part of this solution.”

Bisalloy’s Head of Armour & International Trade Andrew Huckstepp added that, “We are supplying Hanwha for their Australian LAND 8116 requirements and look forward to supplying Hanwha Aerospace for their Egypt contract.

“We are manufacturing high hardness armour grades of steel used to protect our defence forces and Hanwha are an important partner both here in Australia and abroad. Bisalloy looks forward to supporting Hanwha in all aspects of their global requirements.”

ASX-listed Bisalloy’s armoured steel was originally developed in the 1980s for use in the construction of Royal Australian Navy frigates, and has been used on the Collins class submarines, Bushmaster infantry mobility vehicles, and the Hawkei protected mobility vehicle.
