UTS to continue “concierge-style” program for SMEs following trial

Manufacturing News

The University of Technology Sydney (UTS) has announced that it will spend an ongoing annual investment of $250,000 on the SME@UTS program, following an initial 18-month trial.

According to a statement from the university on Monday, 17 SMEs have been connected to UTS student-led projects so far, valued at up to $15,000 each.

SME@UTS is described as “a concierge-style service” helping small and medium enterprises “upskill their workforce, access emerging student talent, collaborate on innovative projects, develop strategic roadmaps and test products” at the university’s facilities.

“SME@UTS supports SMEs to invest in innovation and digital technologies by providing access to university resources, including the remarkable expertise of UTS students,” said Annette Dockerty, Program Lead for SME Engagement at UTS, in a statement.

“SMEs can also extend their professional networks and tap into resources across our innovation ecosystem that includes CSIRO, all levels of government, industry groups and other university and VET partners.”

During the last 18 months, funded student projects have included IoT wearable devices, web-based services, and new robotic product strategies.

SME@UTS is supported by funding from the federal department of education until December 2023.

UTS said it is currently seeking additional support from state and federal governments for next year and beyond.
