AICRAFT to build onboard computers for Emirates Lunar Mission rovers

Manufacturing News

AICRAFT has announced that it will design and build onboard computers for rovers “aimed at prospecting locations on the Moon” for the Emirates Lunar Mission (ELM.)

In a statement on Thursday, Adelaide’s AICRAFT said it will build onboard computers to allow “data processing from science cameras, rover navigation and communication” and autonomous operations on the mission’s future rovers.

The Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre’s (MBRSC) ELM got underway in 2019 and launched its first rover mission in December 2022.

The value of the deal was not mentioned.

Dr Tony Scoleri, co-founder and CEO of AICRAFT, said his company has worked closely with MBRSC on their requirements and developed a unique onboard computer (OBC) design.

“The specifications are now all set and we will begin the first prototype board design and manufacture in the coming months,” said Scoleri.

“This project exemplifies our commitment to empowering customers with reliable, low-power AI-driven solutions and supporting MBRSC to lead humanity’s exploration of the Moon and beyond.”

AICRAFT said it will incorporate “radiation-hardening technologies and innovative designs” in its software and hardware to ensure suitable performance in a challenging environment.

The rover will have to endure temperatures ranging between minus 170 degrees Celsius and 130 degrees Celsius, the cruise phase from Earth to the Moon, and “sudden high-energy particles striking the electronics”, among other issues.

“Collaboration is a key aspect of MBRSC’s approach to advancing space exploration, enabling us to integrate the best technologies and expertise into our missions,” added Dr Hamad Ahmad Al Marzooqi, Project Manager of Emirates Lunar Mission.

“Our partnership with AICRAFT reflects this commitment, as we work together to enhance the onboard computing capabilities of future lunar rovers. The [ELM] is designed to generate scientific insights and technological capabilities that will inform future lunar and planetary exploration.”

AICRAFT was recognised by @AuManufacturing as among Australia’s 50 Most Innovative Manufacturers in 2024.
